Safety in our schools action kit

New Zealand research has highlighted that schools are often unsafe environments for young people who are, or perceived to be transgender, bisexual, takataapui, gay, fa’afafine, lesbian, or intersex. Anyone seen as differing to the heterosexual norm is potentially a target for abuse and discrimination.

This resource provides information and strategies to assist schools in enhancing their environments to be inclusive of sexuality and gender diversity. The rationale is that all students should be able to actively participate and reach their potential within the school environment.

QUEER VISIBILITY Posters

OUT THERE! has created three posters, which promote diversity, inclusiveness and acceptance. Isolation and stigma attached to queer identities plays a major role in queer young people being negatively over-represented in statistics. These posters are an excellent way for people working with youth to reaffirm queer identities and send a signal to young people that this is a queer-friendly space. Click to enlarge. Order your posters by contacting us.

NAGS 2007 Awareness Week Report – Check it out

“To celebrate NAGS 5th year our group collectively decided it was time to broaden our horizons past the school gate and move out into the community. The group decided we would hold a diversity/awareness week with a cornerstone catchphrase being ‘Free To Be’. We wanted a variety of events that included at some level the wider school and community. The group came up with a variety of quirky and fun ideas collectively.  This worked well as right from the beginning it was clear the group as a whole was to have ownership of the event, not just key individuals,” (Daniel Hayward, Student-leader, NAGS)

Final Report for Kaha Queer Youth 2007

A report compiling the final budget, evaluations, and detailed outcomes from January's Kaha Youth Hui has been completed.

One of the key outcomes was that young people at the Youth Hui called for an independent network structure to help overcome many of the challenges faced by groups that support LGBT young people.

73 young gay, lesbian, takataapui and transgender community leaders from all over the country attended the hui, held at Tapu Te Ranga Marae on the weekend of January 26-28 and organised by the OUT THERE! Youth Development Project.
